Light exposure is the most critical element in finding the right placement for a houseplant. Exposure often varies but as a general rule there are classifications of low, moderate, and high light locations. The place of interest for a new plant should be observed throughout the day to determine the level of light.

  • Low light is a dim area where it is difficult to read without turning on a light.  Low light usually comes from a northern or eastern exposure, but can come from any direction without much natural light.
  • Moderate light is typically several hours of bright diffused light but no direct sun.
  • High light is more than a half day of bright diffused light or some direct sun.  High light is often a southern or western exposure, but can be bright light from any direction.
